MEET THE NEXT BIG THINGS; Authors, singers, models, actresses the girls who are tipped for the top

The Daily Mail (London, England); 11/11/2002; Young, Stephanie...

LUCY DAVIS, 29, is an actress whose television career began with a small part in the BBC's Pride And Prejudice. Having worked steadily ever since, it is her most recent role - as receptionist Dawn in the hit comedy The Office - which has thrust her into the limelight. The daughter of comedian Jasper Carrott and his wife Hazel, a journalist, Lucy lives in South-West London with boyfriend Richard, an actor and screenwriter.
MY SHOWBUSINESS career had inauspicious beginnings when, aged 11, I starred in a production of The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe at my school in Solihull. I don't know what I was thinking, but I just hadn't learned any of my lines. So throughout the performance I had to keep running off into the wings to check my script - thankfully, I'm a bit more professional nowadays.
There was never any question about what I wanted to do, and although I did GCSEs and A-levels to have something to fall back on, I enrolled at the Italia Conti stage school at 18.
A year later, I went to the Birmingham Carlton TV workshop, a fantastic free institution which counts Samantha Morton as an alumna. There I was asked to audition for and won a part in Pride And Prejudice.
My parents were always very supportive, and my Dad loves the fact that he has someone to talk to about 'the biz'; but his main concern was that I understood people would always think he'd had a helping hand in any success I gained. I decided then to do my own work which would speak for itself.
My biggest break was in 2000 when I won the role of Dawn in The Office, which is definitely my best role so far.
I loved her as a character, although her lack of ambition is very alien to me. But it was enormous fun working with Ricky Gervais and the rest of the cast - there's a real buzz when you realise the show is becoming a hit.
I aim to work in film, so I'm particularly excited about my next project, which is a movie directed by Nigel Havers called The Real Arnie Griffin.
After that, who knows?
